W26: Market Your Website

Now that you have built and tested your website, I would like you to market it. Let’s say that your budget is NOK 10 000 (or 1800 $ US). Please do the following:

1. Do some research on what advertising costs. You could for instance contact your local newspaper, print shop and other websites.

2. Make a detailed list of how you would market your website. Remember to keep your budget in mind.

3. What if you had double the budget? Come up with a second marketing strategy, this time with NOK 20 000 at your disposal. (3600 $ US)

4. Come up with a viral idea. It doesn’t have to be a video; it can be guys dancing at the airport in gorilla suits. You can use ANYTHING that is at your disposal. Be creative!

1 Costs on advertising

I did some research on what advertising in the local newspaper cost, and found out that it depends on how many people you want to reach out to and how many days the advertisement is supposed to be shown in the newspaper.

If I want to reach out to 2500 people it costs NOK 2000,-. My ad will be shown in the local newspaper approximately 10.000 times and 3-5 days.

If I want to reach out to 7500 people it costs NOK 6000,-. With this price my ad is shown for 5-7 days and approximately 30.000 times in the local newspaper. This is the package that is recommended.

For NOK 11.900,- (which in this case is a little over budget) my ad will reach out to 17.500 people and shown for 7-10 days and approximately 70.000 times in the local newspaper.

2 List of how I would market my website

  • Local newspaper
  • Cost: NOK 6000,-
  • People reached: 7500
  • Duration: 5-7 days
  • Facebook (including Instagram and Messenger)
  • Cost: NOK 3500,-
  • People reached: 2100-5900
  • Duration: 7 days

Total cost: NOK 9500,-

I have taken into account that prices may change and that there may be taxes.

3 Marketing strategy with NOK 20.000,-

With a budget of NOK 20.000,- I would use the same strategy as I wrote above, but I would extend the duration. I would also make an ad for YouTube videos as well as Google ads. YouTube ads can vary in cost, but an approximately price is NOK 80,- per day for local campaigns. Google ads will cost NOK 2918,- per month with approximately 200-410 ad clicks a month.

The list would look like this:

  • Local newspaper
  • Cost: NOK 11.900,-
  • People reached: 17.500
  • Duration: 7-10 days
  • Facebook (including Instagram and Messenger)
  • Cost: NOK 2000,-
  • People reached: 922-2700
  • Duration: 20 days
  • YouTube Ad
  • Cost: NOK 80,- per day = NOK 2400 for 30 days
  • Duration: 30 days / ca. 1 month
  • Google Ad
  • Cost: NOK 2918,- per month
  • Ad clicks: 200-410
  • Duration: 1 month

Total cost: NOK 19.218,-

The prices for Google ads and Facebook ads are prices that are suggested for me personally, based on my preferences. I therefore can not show the sources for these numbers.

4 Viral idea

One idea I have is to have a stand for example at the local shopping center where people can draw their own logo with pen and paper. They hand in their rough sketch with their e-mail address so that the designers at the stand can make a quick logo sample on the computer. After a while they will get an e-mail with their own designed logo in vector graphics as a sample. If they like it, or would like to continue further on with the logo design they simply just contact the design company to arrange a meeting.
