W4: LT: Colour theory: Q3

Design a book cover for one of the following: a.) “Rosemary’s Baby” by Ira Levin: use complementary colours to express anguish and uncertainty. b.) “Animal Farm” by George Orwell: use analogous colours with a contrasting accent to express disagreement and discontent. c.) “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett: use secondary colours to express naivety, honesty and harmony.

The book cover must contain the title and the author’s name.

You must clearly make use of colour to express the desired effects.

I chose to design a book cover for “The Secret Garden”. I was looking for inspiration when I immediately got an idea in my head. I didn’t have any paper nearby, but I did have some post-it stickers. That is why some of my sketches are drawn on post-its.

The final result

According to the task, I had to use secondary colours for this book cover, so I therefore went to Adobe Color and made myself some swatches including purple, dark purple, green, dark green and orange. I chose to have the book cover in the dark purple, and the keyhole showing the garden in mostly green except for the tree trunk and the pathway. The eye of the girl is green, to repeat the green from the garden and the text is in orange to repeat the orange from the garden. Instead of just having pure colours, i added some grain effects to add more texture to the image.
